PORT HARCOURT— GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, before the government of Germany, yesterday, passed a vote of no confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, saying that the body lacks the capacity to conduct credible elections in the country.
Wike, while hosting visiting German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Bernhard Shlagheck, at Government House, Port Harcourt, called on the international community to closely monitor INEC from manipulating the 2019 elections.
“INEC does not have the capacity to hold free and fair elections in the country. See what happened in Kano State. INEC said it wants to investigate the under-age voting that took place last week.
“Who gave the children the voter cards? We will not allow anyone to manipulate the electoral system of the country,” Governor Wike said.
On the stand-off in the National Assembly over the order of elections by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the governor alleged that it was the ruling party’s intention to manipulate the electoral process.
The German envoy to Nigeria, Shlagheck, said he was in Rivers State as part of his familiarization tour of the Niger Delta, noting that he started with Rivers State because of the importance of the state in the structure of the region.
He called on all political stakeholders to work for the success of the 2019 general election just as he lauded Wike on his development strides in the lives of Rivers people.
Meanwhile, teeming supporters from Rivers East senatorial district, yesterday, endorsed Governor Wike for a second term on the strength of his performance.
Thousands of supporters from the eight local government areas of Rivers East senatorial district trooped to the General Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt where they declared support for Wike, come 2019.
The endorsement followed a motion moved by a House of Representatives member representing Obio/Akpor federal constituency, Mr Kingsley for the endorsement of Wike by the district, which was seconded by Majority Whip of Rivers State House of Assembly, Evans Bipi.
Former Rivers State Governor, Sir Celestine Omehia said that Wike has developed the district alongside other parts of the state.
